Practising with family or friends

Anyone you practise your driving with (without paying them) must:

  • Be over 21
  • Be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in, e.g. they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car
  • Have had their full driving licence for 3 years

**You can be fined up to £1,000 and get up to 6 penalty points on your provisional licence if you drive without the right supervision.**

You can drive with as many passengers as the vehicle can legally hold.

It’s illegal for your friend or family member to use a mobile phone while supervising you.

You need your own insurance as a learner driver if you’re practising in a car you own. Your family member or friend will usually be covered on this.
If you’re practising in someone else’s car, you need to make sure their insurance policy covers you as a learner driver.
Some insurance companies require the person supervising you to be over 25 years old.
You can get an unlimited fine, be banned from driving and get up to 8 penalty points for driving without insurance.

Insurance

Do learner drivers have to be insured?
Yes, whether that’s through your driving instructor’s own insurance, your parents’ if you practice in their car, or a policy of your own. It’s the law.

Do you need your own insurance if you’re learning to drive with Leap Driving School?
If you’ve signed up for a course of driving lessons with me and will only be driving my car, my insurance will cover you during your lesson.

Insurance for learner drivers in their own car
You’ll probably want to practice your driving skills at other times, away from our scheduled lessons perhaps you already have your own car, or your parents are willing for you to practice in theirs. In these circumstances, you will either need to have your own learner driver insurance policy or be insured as an occasional named driver of your parents’ vehicle on their policy.
It’s probably a good idea to take out insurance in your own name if you have your own car as you will immediately start to build up your own no claims bonus. At the end of the day, it’s the fastest way to start reducing your annual insurance premium.
